How to play Big Bertha

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Built up in suit from Ace to Queen.

15 tableau piles: Alternate color build down. If groups of cards are in sequence, move them down by alternate color. Any card or legal collection of cards can fill a space. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt 6 cards face-up.

King pile: Kings are transferred to the King pile as soon as they become available.

14 reserve cards: Each card can be played on the foundations or the tableau. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt one card.

Foundation:

Foundation piles are classified into two types.

Primary Foundation:

There are eight piles in the main foundation. Any ace may be moved to any vacant pile in the main foundation. A card may be added to a main foundation pile if it is one higher than the old top card of the pile and of the same suit. As a result, the only card that might be played on a 10 of spades is a J of spades. Each pile is constructed from ace to queen. After then, no further cards may be played.

The Kings Foundation

The king's foundation has one pile. Any king, regardless of suit, may be played to the king's foundation.

Cards cannot be removed from any foundation once they have been placed on it.

Reserve:

The remaining cards are arranged in a single reserve pile.

All cards in the reserve can be played to the tableau or foundation.

Tableau:

Splayed downhill, fifteen tableau piles of six cards each. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and is of the opposing color. As a result, the cards that may be played on a 4 of hearts would be three of spades or three of clubs.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

If the cards are alternately red and black, groups of cards in succession from high to low can be shifted from one tableau column to another.
